Although it is not clearly recorded in history how Stanley Street got its name, the one-way street that links McCallum Street to Boon Tat Street was once known as the “backstage” or more accurately, the Ma Cho Hi Tai Au in Hokkien. It is loosely translated as “behind the Ma Cho Temple’s theatrical stage” with the temple referring to the living monument and architectural masterpiece, Thian Hock Keng Temple, located on Telok Ayer Street which is parallel to Stanley Street. The present-day Stanley Street has mostly three-storey shophouses from the 1930s on one side and carpark entrances to the buildings on Cecil Street on the other. They are generally simpler in design with lesser decorative elements as compared to the shophouses from the earlier eras possibly due to the economic situation of that time. But 30 Stanley Street is a unique property being the only two-storey shophouse on Stanley Street without decorative motifs and ornaments. Despite being small, it has never been overshadowed by its towering neighbours for it is strategically located at the end of Stanley Street, just minutes from the Telok Ayer MRT and beside the Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry. You will find here new and exciting F&B concepts, namely Berlin65 and Tapasu Oyster Gastronomiya. The former is a hommage and tribute to the city of BERLIN, offering a unique atmosphere that will make you feel right at a Berlin home and showcasing the best of Berlin's culinary scene. The latter aims to offer food and drinks that take the Spanish tapas experience to a new level but with authentic Japanese cuisine. Look out for the colourful artworks depicting imagery of the former coastline and echoes of immigrant narratives by a young artist Sarah Lin. This was in part of #RediscoverTelokAyer project by LASALLE College of the Arts and Urban Redevelopment Authority. They aim to provide the public with a variety of avenues to engage with and immerse themselves in the community memories of Telok Ayer that have been uncovered through artistic interventions.
