  • DESCRIPTION

Stanley Street was once non-existent with the original southern shoreline located somewhere along Telok Ayer Street in the early days of Singapore. The first Telok Ayer Reclamation Scheme commissioned in the 1880s redefined the coastline and created Shenton Way, which marks the eastern boundary of the Telok Ayer Conservation area together with Stanley Street just behind the buildings on Cecil Street.

Today, you can find a small collection of approximately 20 pre-war shophouses including 8 Stanley Street which features a combination of full-length French windows, half-length casement windows, and other prominent details like fanlights, decorative bas-relief panels, and plaques inscribed with Chinese characters on the upper floors.

You will also see a Japanese-style mural painted by one of the founders of Shukuu Izakaya along the five-foot way. The Izakaya is a recreation and creative expression of the founders’ sojourns to Japan which offers a trifecta of sublime foods, epic drinks, and an authentic experience that adds a charming character to the shophouse and street in general.
