DESCRIPTION
Ann Siang Road begins from Ann Siang Hill and connects to Kadayanallur Street. Just to throw in a little history, Ann Siang Hill was originally known as Scott’s Hill after its owner Charles Scott who cultivated a nutmeg and clove estate in this area. He then sold it to John Gemmill who christened it as Gemmill’s Hill. Eventually, it was acquired by a wealthy businessman named Chia Ann Siang who built his house and estate on the site, thus the name Ann Siang Hill. Situated on the hill, both Ann Siang Road and Ann Siang Hill are lined with elegantly restored shophouses and richly decorated terraces believed to be constructed between 1903 and 1941.
Presently, the interconnected enclave of Ann Siang, Club, and Amoy Streets is home to clan associations, contemporary bars, chic restaurants, cosy inns, boutique hotels, and even a hidden green space called Ann Siang Hill Park.
Fun fact, a franchise of the world’s oldest barbershop officially recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2014 is housed in one of these lovely Peranakan tile-decorated shophouses in Ann Siang Road.
